Your Teeth After Invisalign

So you’ve just completed your orthodontic treatment with our Manhattan Invisalign Teen or Invisalign – congratulations are in order! There’s a good chance that you’re thrilled to be done with it and ready to move on with your life. Not so fast though! While you may be finished with the Invisalign process, that doesn’t mean that your teeth are all set to go. There are a few more things that you’ll have to consider in order to keep your teeth in as good of shape as possible following your treatment. As your providers of Riverdale and Manhattan orthodontics, we at Goodman Orthodontics would like to share them with you.

Wear a Retainer

The first thing that we need to note is that after your Riverdale and Manhattan Invisalign treatment is completed, just about all patients will need to wear a retainer afterward. This is a critical stage of the orthodontic process as while Invisalign will move your teeth into more proper positions, the retainer will keep them there and prevent them from shifting back toward an unfavorable alignment. There are several different types of retainers to choose from and as an Invisalign patient, you may prefer the Essix retainer as it’s similar to wearing Invisalign’s aligners.

Brush and Floss Daily

This should go without saying, but we’ll say it anyway! Brushing and flossing need to be a part of your daily oral hygiene regimen. These important tasks will help remove bacteria and plaque from your teeth, which can lead to gum disease and tooth decay. In the first few weeks following your Invisalign treatment, you may find that your teeth and gums may be more sensitive than usual. During this time, you may want to use sensitivity toothpaste for your teeth and rinse with warm salt water if you’re feeling any discomfort.

Continue with Your Regular Dental Exams

Finally, we should mention that you can’t skip out on your regular dental exams either. While a committed daily oral hygiene regimen is great, it’s also important to visit your dentist for dental exams to make sure that you don’t have any underlying dental problems. If any are found, they can be taken care of before they develop into something more serious. Not to mention, the professional teeth cleanings you’ll receive will give your teeth a more beautiful shine!
