Many patients present with crowded upper teeth, and related narrow upper jaws. This often has a hereditary component, but is also exacerbated by mouthbreathing or thumb-sucking as a child.

Appliances such as a palatal expander (up until growth is complete) or in some cases Invisalign, can broaden the upper dental arch, creating space for the crowded teeth to align, as well as yielding a fuller, more pleasing smile.
